The Salted Cookie

About

Welcome to The Salted Cookie! I’m Becca, a Boston-based business consultant by day and a baking ninja in my free time. If you are a lover of all things sweet and salty, you’ve come to the right place.

I’ve been baking a mess in the kitchen as long as I can remember. My parents taught me to never show up anywhere empty handed, so at a young age I became known for always arriving with baked goods in hand. The first cookie I ever created was when my brother was away at college I decided to bake his favorite cookie – Oatmeal Raisin – only I did not double check all my ingredients first and of course did not have raisins. So I threw in some dried cranberries, white chocolate chips and coconut flakes and voila! My first cookie creation was born and a major hit among the family.

I have great memories of baking as a kid, especially around the holidays. We would go over to my grandparents’ house where my mom, my uncle and Grandma would all have their mixers out and just be cranking out delicious cookies nonstop for hours. Then they would create these mixed cookie platters with the homemade italian wedding cookies, pizzelles, thumbprints, chocolate chip cookies, M&M cookies and so many more and we’d enjoy them at the holiday events and send them off to friends and neighbors as well.

The Salted Cookie _ Becca Shaw I try to bake delicious memories with every recipe. When I started The Salted Cookie I was working as a project manager at a Digital Agency where I started to bake on the weekends and bring my experiments to work on Monday mornings. When people started asking for the recipes, I realized I needed to start writing things down so that they could be recreated. The hardest part was trying to figure out a blog name that represented me. I actually first bought the domain name TotesDelish.com before realizing shortly after that I am not a 13 year old teeny bopper and maybe would regret that name in a few years. I had just recently started experimenting with topping my cookies with a sprinkle of coarse sea salt and that’s when it hit me – The Salted Cookie. It just felt right, so I bought the domain name and here we are today! I used to have a “cookie list” that I managed at my last job where every Monday morning when I brought in a new recipe, I would email this BCC list of people to let them know the cookies were at my desk and what the recipe was. Some people said the best day of their career was the day they made the cookie list. True story.

So you might be wondering what the tagline “Sweet and Salty Synergy” is all about. If there’s one thing that I have learned in my career in business consulting, it’s that the more buzzwords you can fit into a sentence, the more you will confuse people into thinking you actually know what you’re talking about. Leverage, synergy, purple cow, boil the ocean, open the kimono, net net, baseline, low-hanging fruit, reinvent the wheel, blue sky, and so many more. Synergy has always been a favorite of mine because rarely does anyone use it correctly. The actual definition of synergy is “the interaction of two or more substances to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.” And that’s what I do with my baking. I take sweet and salty ingredients and mix them together to make allkinds of delicious treats for you to enjoy.

I spend a lot of time traveling for work. You remember that scene from Up in the Air where George Clooney is telling Anna Kendrick about how to earn as many points as possible? That’s my life. So when I can be home whipping up a home cooked meal or baking up a new recipe, that’s my stress reflief, my therapy, and my creative outlet outside of excel spreadsheets.

And I couldn’t do this without my loyal taste testers. It takes a village of hungry friends and family to taste all of my recipes and provide real-time delicious feedback. My Grandpa is still my #1 fan – he’s 88 and has mastered sending me Snapchats asking for cookies. I call him every single day to check-in and see what’s new with life and he starts every phone call with the one question “Where are my cookies?”

A few other fun facts about me:

  • I am originally from the hometown of the Wiffleball in Shelton, Connecticut but have lived in Boston ever since attending Boston College (though I do not have a wicked Bahston accent)
  • I got a high-five on my 29th birthday from Jimmy Fallon
  • Twice I played the role of “mom hands” in a CVS Pharmacy mobile
    app demo video
  • I once hit batting practice off of Don Mattingly
  • My mom was diagnosed as a celiac and it is my life’s baking mission to make a gluten-free cinnamon roll that tops a real life Cinnabon
  • My life was changed for the better when I discovered browned butter
  • I have been to Disney World over 30 times (and I am 30)

So needless to say, I’m happy you’re here. I hope that I am able to provide you withfun, easy to make recipes that you and your friends and family can all enjoy. I hope that my recipes inspire people to take chances and realize that failure isn’t all that bad when you end up eating brownie bits out of a failed batch. I’d love to hear from you, so please feel free to send me an email or contact me on any of my social media channels any time you want.

I have loved every minute of this little cookie journey of mine so far and I am excited for all of the sweet and salty synergy that lies ahead.

xo
